The Durst Organization’s VIA 57 WEST is a unique triangular-like mixed-use residential building with 31 occupied floors; rising to 43 total stories at its tallest point and sloping down to one story at the west and south facades. Comprised of 611,000 SF of 80/20 residential units, 121,000 SF of commercial/community facilities, 59,000 SF of retail, 107,000 SF of parking, and 37,000 SF of mechanical space, the structure will also include two levels of underground parking/mechanical space and three levels of mechanical space at the top of the building. Plans include high-end interior finishes, an athletic center, an indoor pool and basketball court, theater, golf simulator, and children’s play space. A 25,000-SF elevated courtyard is created by a parabolic cut in the building’s floor plan, running from the northeast to the southwest. The cut allows for a central open space based on the features of Central Park. In keeping with the developer’s commitment to constructing green buildings, this project is intended to incorporate a variety of sustainable features. The building structure is primarily concrete, with a transfer to steel supports at the top story. Hunter Roberts worked with Gondolas in Design to design and build a custom window and facade-cleaning rig. This maintenance rig will travel the height of the building along primary tracks imbedded in the north and east corners of the building facade.
