The new North Star Academy Charter School at 377 Washington Street in Newark, NJ includes construction of a 162,500 SF, 6-story school serving students in kindergarten through 12th grade, and facade improvements and ground floor level enhancements to an existing, attached 4-level parking garage.
The Elementary School/Middle School occupies floors 1-3, and the High School occupies floors 4-6. The building features 2 gymnasiums, 2 multipurpose rooms, 4 performing arts centers, and 4 labs – chemistry, physics, biology, graphic design.
The building is a steel structure on steel piles. A soil exchange was required prior to pile cap/grade beam placement. Facade is brick, metal panel and curtain wall. Various pick-up/ drop-off canopies and main roof is EPDM. Classroom construction is metal stud/drywall. Stair and elevator shafts are concrete. Typical school finishes include acoustic ceilings, painted partitions, vinyl flooring, and plastic laminate casework.
