Temple University Pearson McGonigle Hall Additions & Renovations
Hunter Roberts performed general contracting services, as well as managed the other prime contractors for the renovations, upgrades, and expansion of Temple University’s Division 1 athletic and recreational facilities by combining two existing side-by-side buildings, Pearson and McGonigle Halls, into a single structure.
The centerpiece of the expansion was a 140,000 SF, third floor overbuild constructed atop the existing 100,500 SF footprint of buildings. This included the new home for the Division 1 Basketball Program with a 7,000 SF coaches suite, 2,700 SF office suites for Campus Recreation, two Division 1 regulation practice basketball courts for men’s and women’s teams, four recreational basketball courts, a multi-purpose room for physical therapy and personal training, locker rooms, a press/video room, and Temple University’s Sports Hall of Fame. A 15,000-SF, glass-enclosed mezzanine replaced the pre-existing concrete porch area in front of the buildings. Upon entering, patrons see 12,000 SF of retail space and a rock-climbing wall. Above the wall is a cardiovascular workout room. Another workout facility sits on the second floor. The rest of Pearson and McGonigle Halls received “a face lift” for lighting and ceiling fixtures.
The scope included converting a diving pool into a sub-basement mechanical space which houses large grey water system tanks and a new lecture hall. Additionally, the mechanical scope required 16 total AHU’s, 13 of which were designed to be located in a newly built 31,000 SF interstitial mechanical level. LEED Certified.
