Drexel University The Summit at University City

Hunter Roberts successfully completed this new student housing, retail, and commercial development that included constructing the combination of a 24-story, eight-story, and five-story building for Drexel University at 3400 Lancaster Avenue. The project involved the demolition of the Frederic O. Hess Engineering Research Laboratory, a 25,000-SF steel and concrete building with full basement, and included the demolition of large cast-in-place concrete foundations and concrete walls that were used for materials testing. The new buildings feature 356,400 SF of apartment-style and suite-style residential living space with 1,315 beds (351 Units); 19,000 SF of street-level retail and commercial space; 21,700 SF of marketplace style dining facility on the lower level with seating for 400; 17,600 SF of amenity space including a fitness center, business center, game room, social lounge, theater, mail room, a 10,000 SF student sky lounge, public restrooms; and 90-car parking garage. The Summit features a thermally sound enclosure of precast and glass to mitigate solar gain. Green roofing reduces heat island effect and building cooling loads, while operable windows throughout the residences help reduce energy consumption. Native plants on the amenity deck capture and filter storm water.
