The new Training Recreation Education Center (TREC) for the Newark Housing Authority provides job training resources as well as recreational space for the local community. The Center includes a gymnasium with full basketball court; lockers and showers; fitness room; childcare center; study/library; classrooms for career development and job skills training; and community meeting rooms.

Inspired by the geometric collision of the urban grid of Newark, the city adjacent to the park, the building’s form is two interlocking triangles representing where the city’s grid formation shifts in order to center around the park. The result is an iconic building formed by two connected triangular wedges. One wedge is open and transparent, housing meeting rooms and classrooms. The other wedge is solid and opaque, housing the gymnasium and recreation functions. This community center intends to spark rejuvenation of the adjacent community housing.
